Office Love: 10 Great Things About Offices

March 29, 2010
I’m currently attempting a career change, but my hurdle is that bosses tend to not hire people who have absolutely no experience whatsoever. People like me. Ahem. In the pursuit of employability I have, for the last two weeks, been slipping on my favourite black heels and catching the peak hour tram (much to my irritation) for some unpaid work experience in order to learn the ins-and-outs of administration and office life. Coming, as I am, from the intense, topsy-turvy and fast-paced world of hospitality I discovered that there are so many things I love about offices, office culture and the old 9-to-5 lifestyle:
  • High heels and dressing up. Not having remnants of other people’s food on your shoes
  • Not everything is Urgent with a capital U
  • Having a desk. With drawers. Currently I haven’t taken over the drawers, they have miscellaneous cables and crap in them, but by the end of this week I anticipate them being full of lip gloss, pens and post-it notes
  • Lunch breaks. LUNCH BREAKS! A whole hour!
  • I have an inbox. With my name on it in a pretty font. I made the label and some others and it was considered a legit use of my (unpaid for) time
  • Having access to photocopiers and fax machines
  • It is acceptable to be sick and stay home. Your sick day doesn’t cause one of your work mates to work an eleven hour shift
  • Chatting is ok, expected and encouraged
  • Ability to get up and leave the room whenever I want.  I don’t have to worry that other people will have to cover me while I’m gone, I just get up and walk out of the room
  • Stationary, ordering stationary and stationary cupboards. ‘Nuff said

Bear in mind that this is two weeks in. Offices and I are still deeply entrenched in our honeymoon period. But so far it’s love and sloppy P.D.As all round.

Do you have office love and what is it you love about your workplace? What do you hate? What are some fun office hints or tips I don’t know about? Do people really gossip around the water-cooler? Induct me into your 9-to-5 world!

I love this! I love working in an office for the air conditioning (on an enormously humid day, I feel SO grateful to be working in an air conditioned office!), proximity to interesting shops/food courts, the people that you interact with, and even silly things like being able to print/fax/photocopy something because none of that stuff is set up in my apartment yet!

You forgot having your own mug or leaving your office to make coffee. That’s my favorite thing. I keep a stash of tea varieties on a hidden shelf.

I also enjoy getting whatever stationery I choose but don’t have to pay for. Post-its in the shape of arrows? A MUST!

Hope you get a good foot in the door xx

Ohhh! I might offer to take over the stationary ordering duties so I can stock up on heart shaped post-its and awesome pens. Hurrah!

Ah, have fun! (apart from the icky peak hour trams…eek!) It must be a nice change from the stress of hospitality!
I really know nothing of offices, but I could list some things I like about Orifices instead?…nah, probably not appropriate….
I do like the show “The office”, if that counts?
    Anyway, I’m an idiot.
I hope that nothing but good things come from this experience, and that the office love blooms into a long lasting and passionate romance!
Hopefully it doesn’t get too sexual though, as that would be weird.
    Anyway, as i said: idiot.

Enjoy the taste of office life!

Sexual wouldn’t be weird with the orifices. I’ll be hanging out for that 10 things about orifices list. Orifice, orifice, orifice. That’s one weird word. Orifice. Will this get me listed on some unsavory searches? I hope so.

Oh my gosh, I’ve actually seen some of the WEIRDEST and definitely unsavoury search terms that people have stumbled upon my blog with: “Mohair pornsites” ” chewing testicle” and “Coraline fuck” to name a few… O.o

All in good time, I reckon I’ve got a year before I get BORED OUT OF MY MIND. But, it’s not hospitality, it’s not dealing with the public, and I’ve never worked in an office before. So all good so far. I’m lucky that I’m doing this work experience in the office at the place I already work, so they know me, they know what I’m like and nothing I do, say or wear is surprising them. They already dig me!
